In the under-21 wrestling, the Armenian representative lost to Marcel Guida (Russia) in the 105 kg weight category, weighing only 104 kg. Simon, who weighed 104 kg, was almost 5 kg heavier than his opponent.
The 17-year-old weightlifter showed a result of 394 kilograms in this international test. In the snatch, Martirosyan held the 184-kilogram barbell above his head, a record in his age group at this year’s World Championships in Almaty and the European Championships in Limassol. The Armenian weightlifter surpassed his opponent by 9 kg in the snatch, but equalized the Russian in the push-up exercise, lifting 219 kg.
Before Martirosyan’s performance in Cyprus, Armenian weightlifters showed good results. Smbat Margaryan, a 21-year-old weightlifter in the 56 kg weight category, became the vice-champion in the 252 kg (107 + 145) doubles. Norayr Avetisyan in the 77 kg weight category took the second place with the result of 318 kg (138 + 180) in doubles, and Hakob Mkrtchyan in the same weight category was satisfied with a bronze medal in the result of 313 kg (137 + 176).
19-year-old Isabella Yaylyan became the European champion in the women’s 58 kg weight category. The Armenian representative gained 191 kg (85 + 106) in wrestling.
It should be reminded that on November 4-16, Armenian weightlifters participated in the World Championships in Almaty, where they managed to win Olympic tickets. The men’s team won 5 out of 6 possible rankings, and the women’s team won 3 out of 4.
The rankings of the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics could be won at the European Games, which will be hosted by Baku in 2015. However, weightlifting was removed from the program and replaced by sambo, which is not an Olympic sport.
Earlier, the head of the press service of the National Olympic Committee of Armenia (NOCA) Yuri Aleksanyan said in a conversation with “Azatutyun”. “The Azerbaijanis, assessing the strength of the Armenian weightlifters, suggested to the President of the International Olympic Committee to remove weightlifting from the program and introduce sambo instead. They agreed. “Look, the number of our medal contenders has decreased by one sport.”
However, it is not yet clear whether the NOCA will prefer to participate in the European Games in Baku. It should be noted that in the past, Armenia’s participation in the World Boxing Championships was conditioned by the National Olympic Committee, first of all, by drawing Olympic rankings. Next year, the rankings for the weightlifters will be drawn at the World Championships in Houston, USA, which will be the last chance to perform in Rio.
