MONTEVIDEO (Uypress)- The unemployment rate was 7.4% in January, which marks a slight increase of four tenths of a percentage point if the 7% registered last December is taken into account, according to data released this Thursday by the Institute National Statistics (INE).
There are 1,797,300 active people in the country, of which 1,664,600 are employed and 132,700 unemployed, according to The report presented by the INE.
Unemployment in January was slightly higher in Montevideo with 7.6% compared to 7.2% registered in the interior.
As for the busy people8.1% are underemployed, which marks a reduction from 9.2% in December, while the percentage of people who did not have a record in social security remained stable at 21.8%.
The percentage of busy absent was 25.1%: “This can be explained from the increase in absent employed persons as a result of license application (vacation, illness, study, care, etc.) and of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic“, explains the INE.
In January 2022, a drop in the average effective hours worked in the main occupation (27.1 hours in January 2022) can also be observed, it adds.
The activity rate fell from 62% to 61.7% and the employment rate from 57.7% to 57.1% from December 2020 to January 2021.
