The passage through Locales 008 and 002 in Mérida state is still closed due to the constant rock and tree slides after the rains. This was confirmed by Alexis Nava, Secretary of Infrastructure and Housing of the Government of Mérida.
“Around the Santa Teresa tunnel, in the S, we made the variant about a week ago, however, we managed to enter on foot to the sector called La Trujillana, where (…) there are about 1 kilometer of landslides, movements of land that are blocking the main road,” he said.
Likewise, Nava explained that the passageway of La Trujillana is clogged with the material that slipped down one of the sides. This event left between 1.5 and 2 meters of sediment. He stressed that it will take several days to clear it.
Nearly 1 kilometer of sediment fell on the road from Mérida to El Vigía
Likewise, he commented that they are deployed by Trunk 002 where they have already managed to enter the La Providencia sector. In the direction of Santa Cruz de Mora-El Vigía, they reached Roca Julia.
The official pointed out that there is still a kilometer and a half left to make the total clearance of roads. “We saw it with drones and pedestrian access has been a bit complicated. We can estimate around 100,000 cubic meters because we have approximately 1 kilometer of material that fell on the road.”
However, he confirmed that the passage from Mérida to El Vigía is closed.
Nava added that this situation had not been seen since 2005, when the wind shook Santa Cruz de Mora. However, he clarified that the difference is that, due to the continuous rains this year, the ground has remained saturated with water and permanent landslides continue. They wait for the rainfall to stop in order to solve this situation.
On the other hand, Mérida Civil Protection reported that they will close the vehicular passage for approximately 1 hour this Wednesday, November 23 in the La Roca sector, Local 003 of the Zea municipality, to guarantee greater accessibility and security. In Local 002 there is total obstruction of vehicular traffic due to landslides with mud pouring.
Pan-American Civil Protection officials evaluated from the La Montañita sector to La Roca Julia in the Alberto Adriani municipality since the heavy rains triggered mass movements, affecting the Trasandina Local 002 road by obstructing both channels. This also affected the electrical system.
It should be noted that the machinery is already doing the cleaning work.
