On September 13, the international community silently watched when the units of the Azerbaijani armed forces, using artillery, mortars and anti-aircraft fire, opened intense fire at the Armenian positions located in several parts of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border at once. As a result of the two-day active military operations carried out by the enemy, according to published official data, the Armenian side has 207 victims and missing persons, the number is not final, 293 servicemen, 3 civilians were wounded, 20 servicemen were captured.
The international community, including high-ranking leaders of various countries, made one or two statements condemning Azerbaijan’s actions, and at first they were mainly appeals to both sides. And that’s when the enemy targeted peaceful Armenian settlements and residents.
The international community was also silent when Azerbaijan returned the body of the captured and then killed Armenian soldier to the Armenian side.
After all this, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev announced in the occupied city of Berdzor on September 21 that “no one can stop them, and Azerbaijan showed the whole world what it is capable of”.
How did the Arab world react to the military aggression on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border? What allies can Armenia have in the Arab world in the current situation?
168. am:in a conversation with Associate Professor Hayk Kocharyan, Head of the Department of Arabic Studies of YSU Oriental Studies Faculty in response to these questions, he mentioned that there are actually two reactions from the Arab world, from Lebanon and Syria, and there was no official similar reaction from other Arab countries.
“However, the Arab press generally covered the events, the aggression, but the wording was very mild, in some places it appeared that the sources were not their journalists in our country or region, but the main translations of the international press into Arabic. There are wordings that cause a misunderstanding that the clashes are taking place on the border of Artsakh. It can be said that the responses were generally superficial,” Hayk Kocharyan said.
As for what allies Armenia can get in the Arab world, Hayk Kocharyan answered: allies are formed in work, and Armenia can work with all Arab countries and have mutual understanding on the issue in case of different configurations.
“It is obvious that it is possible to work well with Egypt and the Arab Emirates, and it is also necessary to think and speed up the process with Saudi Arabia, which should have ended with the establishment of relations. Now we must try to bring this to its end.
There is potential with everyone, here it is a matter of agreeing and mutually evaluating the interests, coming to an agreement, work is required, otherwise there is an opportunity to cooperate with everyone. Possibilities are created, they are not simply set,” emphasized Hayk Kocharyan.
To the question: Has the Azerbaijani aggression been superficially covered by the Arab world with the intervention of the Azerbaijani side, Hayk Kocharyan answered that simply the information coming from the general streams was covered as it was.
“The same wrong wording was in one of the articles of the New York Times, that is, it should be noted here that the wording was in general, and if we take a specific media, Al Jazeera conducted an interview with the RA Deputy Foreign Minister, that is, the Armenian the point of view was covered, presented,” he emphasized.
