Through the National Administration of Drugs, Food and Medical Technology (Anmat), government banned the marketing of La Tranquera brand honey. The decision was formalized this Wednesday, through Provision 9312/2022, published in the Official Gazette.
The regulations prohibit the manufacture, fractionation and commercialization in the country of the product «honey La Tranqueraprepared by Omar González, Belgrano 17 Bis – 2128, Arroyo Seco, Santa Fe, RNE 21-062424 and RNPA 21-088970, for lacking establishment and product registration, and for being falsely labeled by displaying a number on the label non-existent RNE and RNPA belonging to another product and expired, and for containing hydroxymethylfurfural in a percentage higher than that allowed by the Argentine Food Codeconsequently turning out to be an illegal product.
Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a product of the breakdown of existing sugars in honey, especially fructose, in the presence of acid. Such decomposition can begin during hive nectar ripening when fructose and acid concentrations are adequate. The temperature increases the rate of reaction, therefore, This parameter is often used as an indicator of honey that has been overheated..
HMF is not a toxic substance nor does it alter honey unless it is in excessive amountswhich usually causes its darkening due to interactions with amino acids and sugars, undergoing polymerization and rearrangement, both in the presence and absence of oxygen.
