As he writes: CNN:Ling Jihua, chief adviser to former Chinese President Hu Jintao, has been sentenced to life in prison for taking bribes, abusing his official position and stealing state secrets.
The prosecutor’s office accused him of taking more than 77 million yuan (11 million euros) in bribes, either directly or through family members. He was found guilty of illegally obtaining state secrets and using his power to help others gain access to their homes.
Ling, whose former position is equivalent to that of White House Chief of Staff, was arrested last summer, and his closed-door trial took place in June.
His conviction is considered one of the greatest achievements of President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign. Xin has vowed to eradicate corruption in the public sector, which has long provoked Chinese dissatisfaction with the government.
Ling said he would not appeal the verdict, accepting all charges.
