Shashi Tharoor Kerala Congress: Everything is not going well in Kerala Congress regarding MP Shashi Tharoor. From time to time, different views and comments are being heard about Shashi Tharoor among the party leaders. Tharoor reached north Kerala on Monday, after which the party’s state president Sudhakaran asked other leaders to refrain from making public statements. He instructed that he should not say anything that could harm the unity of the party. On the other hand, supporters of MP Tharoor say that now a lot has changed for him in the party.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee President K. Sudhakaran said, “Congress is a party that ensures internal democracy. Public statements affecting the unity of the party should be avoided. Tharoor is a tall leader of Congress. There is freedom to participate. There should be no hindrance in the organizational work of the leaders. The party will debate on issues related to Tharoor.”
Youth Congress prevented from speaking in the program.
Shashi Tharoor started his four-day tour in North Kerala and after that Sudhakaran made this appeal to the party leaders. Following pressure from the party, the Youth Congress on Sunday pulled out of an event in Kozhikode where the MP was to speak about “the challenges to the Sangh Parivar and secularism”. Tharoor initially said he was watching the event with a “sportsmanlike spirit”, but later demanded an inquiry into the Youth Congress’s decision to bar him from giving a speech.
What did the Kozhikode district president say?
Sudhakaran’s statement was in stark contrast to the party’s Kozhikode district president Praveen Kumar, who claimed that Tharoor was denied the venue because the talks were being considered a “factional activity”. Sending a strong message to Tharoor’s detractors in the party, Kozhikode MP MK Raghavan on Sunday said, “Those who have banned Youth Congress from hosting Tharoor should remember that Vishu (celebrated in April Vala (harvest festival of Kerala) cannot be finished by cutting Amaltas.
‘Tharoor should not have been banned’
Amidst all this, former KPCC president and Vatakara MP K Muraleedharan on Monday added a new twist to the controversy, claiming that some party leaders saw Tharoor as a threat. Without naming anyone, Muraleedharan said, “Those eyeing the Chief Minister’s post are behind this.” I don’t want to name anyone. Tharoor should not have been banned.”
‘Everyone knows what happened…’
Meanwhile, when asked about MK Raghavan’s demand for an internal inquiry into the episode, Muraleedharan said, “Everyone knows what has happened… There is no need for an inquiry as things are very clear. Should not have been stopped from using the Congress platform.” Congress MLA VD Satishan’s statement has also come to the fore on this whole episode. Refusing to get into the controversy, he said, “I do not want to comment on what he (Muralidharan) said. It is a party matter and the state president will comment on it.”
Tharoor will be active in Kerala politics
It is notable that Shashi Tharoor is said to be active in the politics of the state. There is a possibility of changing the equation between these leaders in the coming days. The upper caste Hindu Nair camp in the Congress is already full of ambitious leaders and Tharoor’s entry into state politics is likely to trigger a churn in the group. However, both Muraleedharan and Sudhakaran were not with Tharoor when he contested the party president’s election in October.
IUML supports Tharoor
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), an ally of the Congress, supported Tharoor on Monday. Party leader PK Kunhalikutty said, “When the Congress is leading the secular front in the country, Tharoor is its vanguard. He is a popular leader and it is up to the Congress how they use Tharoor.” Tharoor will hold discussions with IUML chief Panakkad Syed Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal and Kunhalikutty in Malappuram on Tuesday. Tharoor has also met two Catholic bishops in Kozhikode in the last two days.
