Karen Tshmarityan. Armenia is ready to discuss the possible proposals of the Silk Road project
There is significant progress in EIB participation in infrastructure projects in Armenia. This was stated by the President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) NB, Werner Heuer, yesterday in Luxembourg during a meeting with the Minister of Economy of the Republic of Armenia, Karen Chshmarityan.
The press service of the Ministry of Economy informs that during the meeting the parties discussed the current course of bilateral cooperation, as well as the development prospects.
Speaking about the recent developments around Iran, Werner Heuer highlighted Armenia as a cooperation platform for the expansion of the programs implemented by the EIB. The format of calculations of Armenia as a platform of cooperation within EAEU was also discussed.
Werner Heuer referred to the EU-China cooperation and in this context the possibilities of Armenia’s involvement in the Great Silk Road program and the implementation of relevant programs. In response, Karen Chshmarityan emphasized that Armenia is involved in the historical Silk Road program and is ready to discuss possible proposals.
RA Minister of Economy, highlighting the programs implemented by the European Investment Bank in Armenia, noted that cooperation can be deepened by involving the EIB in SME support and sectoral programs. In this context, the parties discussed the possibilities of implementing a joint project aimed at the development of winemaking in Armenia, based on the experience of the Winery in Moldova. The EBRD president noted that the bank attaches importance to the implementation of the APEX credit program aimed at the development of SMEs in Armenia and reaffirmed the EBRD’s commitment to the effective implementation of the program.
The possibilities of implementation of relevant programs by EIB in Armenia in the field of renewable energy, in particular solar energy, were also discussed. Karen Chshmarityan informed Werner Heuer that during his recent visit to Lithuania, he visited Global BOD Group, a company known in the world for the production of solar panels and high efficiency panels, with which the Armenian company Simartek signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of solar energy. The EBRD president noted that the bank is interested in the implementation of programs in that field. The parties agreed to discuss the possibilities of the bank’s participation in the said cooperation.
As a result of the meeting, the following agreements were also reached.
♦With the support of the EIB, to implement a program for the development of wine industry in Armenia, supporting the private sector.
♦ Discuss the implementation of relevant programs aimed at supporting SMEs, involving the SME DAC.
♦In the spring of 2016, to hold a seminar in Armenia dedicated to EIB tools and increasing EIB involvement in Armenia’s infrastructure projects, as well as in projects implemented in the private sector.
