September 18 marked the 114th anniversary of the birth of the famous scientist Viktor Hambardzumyan. Early in the morning, Byurakan observatory employees visited the Byurakan observatory pantheon, Hambardzumyan’s grave, to pay their respects.
Ruben Shakaryan, a long-time diplomat, extraordinary envoy and minister plenipotentiary, who has been the assistant to the President of the National Academy of Sciences Viktor Hambardzumyan for 10 years in the field of foreign relations, every year on that day places flowers at the pedestal of Hambardzumyan’s statue and pays his respects. Mr. Shakaryan says that he has been working since he was 13 years old, and the best years of his life are those spent with the great scientist.
“I consider that Viktor Hambardzumyan is the most famous Armenian in the world. He was a world famous man, I always boasted that I was his assistant. I have a very large collection of works of art, but the portrait of Hambardzumyan, painted by Martiros Saryan in 1949, is particularly valuable. When in 1949 After Orbeli, Viktor Hambardzumyan became the president of the NAS, Martiros Saryan painted him. Now that picture hangs in the most important place in my house,” said Ruben Shakaryan in an interview with Aravot.am.
Let us add that Viktor Hambardzumyan has made a great contribution to the various fields of astronomy and astrophysics, cosmology, theoretical physics, mathematics and philosophy. He is particularly known for his work and discoveries on elementary particle physics, planetary nebula theory, stellar dynamics, galactic age determination, radiative transfer theory, star diaspores, active galactic nuclei, superdense stars, flares and other unstable stars.
By the way, since 2009, September 18 is also celebrated as Astronomy Day in Armenia.
