in 2022 the 125th anniversary of the birth of the famous writer Yeghishe Charents is celebrated. Within the framework of the anniversary year, with the support of the RA Ministry of Education and Culture, E. House of Charents Museum, RA NAS M. In cooperation with Abeghyan Institute of Literature and Yerevan State University, the republican conference entitled “Charents and its period” is being held on November 23-25.
The opening of the conference took place in the hall of the presidency of the RA National Academy of Sciences. Ara Khzmalyan, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Armenia, Zhanna Manukyan, director of Yeghishe Charents’ House-Museum, gave a speech of welcome.
The deputy minister welcomed the participants of the conference on the occasion of the start and emphasized that this conference is important in the context of jubilee events, and it should become a serious opportunity to rethink the literary heritage of Charents.
According to Ara Khzmalyan, all the members of the working group coordinating the jubilee events dedicated to Yeghishe Charents’ 125th birthday agreed on one point. Charents jubilee cannot be celebrated as a mere jubilee ceremony.
“Charents is a message for us and all jubilee events should have a public message. Charents is one of the figures of our spiritual history who was more than a poet. He is an ontological orientation for us, an ontological concept. As they say, he is more than a poet and his creative legacy is more than art. In his works, Charents condensed the anxieties, concerns, dead ends of our nation, but also spoke about our cherished feelings, patriotic ideas. His unsurpassed masterpiece “I’m My Sweet Armenia” is one of those proofs. “Now is the best time to read and re-read Charents,” stressed Ara Khzmalyan.
According to him, when reading the works of Charents, we face our eternal questions again, rather than getting answers, and we are convinced that our ontological questions are very often in a cycle and after passing a historical stage, they appear in front of us.
“Even in the sometimes very dark and pessimistic affairs of Charents, there is strength, there is a citizen of the state who stands firmly on our land. If we want to recognize our defects, our characteristics, our flights and our strength, we must be in constant contact with Yeghishe Charents,” concluded the deputy minister.
Academician-secretary of the department of Armenian Studies and Social Sciences of the Academy, Yuri Suvaryan, believes that the poetic world was created by talents, but they were always guided by geniuses, one of whom is Yeghishe Charents.
“In his poetic world, we feel how deep Charents’ thinking is, how influential and valid the ideas he expressed in his works are. Charents is innovative both in terms of content, style and especially in the choice of words. Even some dialect words that he uses in his works are relevant and indisputable,” Suvaryan emphasized and reminded that Charents mainly addresses the themes of homeland, patriotism, life and the world’s eternity, love, which are eternal.
During the jubilee year, the house-museum of Yeghishe Charents presented multi-genre events, which were intended for different target audiences, but the director of the house-museum Zhanna Manukyan gives a key importance to the three-day scientific session, noting that they will address the history of the foundation of the house-museum, Charents to works from different periods.
“The House-Museum has declared November as the month of memory of Charents, because along with the 125th anniversary of the great writer’s birth, November marks the 85th anniversary of Charents’ death, and the conference will contribute to perpetuating his memory and revaluing his literary heritage,” said the director. and added that they will publish the complete collection of the writer’s works, the first volume of which has already been compiled. By the end of the 125th anniversary, the first volume will be on the table of the scientific community, and the commemorative month will be concluded with the unveiling of the commemorative plaque. Charents’ memorial plaque will be placed on the facade of the building at Mashtots 17, the building where the poet lived for the last two years of his life.
It should be noted that both scientists and recent graduates of Yerevan State University will make reports at the three-day conference. Reports on the life and activities of Charents will be presented, which can shed new light on the huge literary legacy he left behind.
The second session of the conference will be held on November 24 at YSU Faculty of Armenian Philology, the third session will be held on November 25 at RA NAS M. Abeghyan Institute of Literature.
The presented reports will be published in the collection of materials of the conference “Charents and its period”.
