India shined with two gold medals in team events at the Commonwealth Games. Women entered the ring as dark horses in lawn bowls.. with an inspiring performance, golden history was written.. TT men once again emerged as champions. Lifter Vikas Thakur Rajatha Kanthulinadu.
Birmingham: On the fifth day of the Commonwealth Games, India won three medals, including two gold medals. The Indian women’s lawn bowls team created history by winning the gold without any expectations. In the final of the men’s table tennis team, the defending champion India consisting of Sarath Kamal, Sathian, Harmeet Desai and Sanil Shetty defeated Singapore 3-1 and won the green medal once again. Vikas Thakur won silver in weightlifting. In the lawn bowls women’s force final on Tuesday, India comprising Lovely Chaubey (lead), Pinky (second), Nayanmoni Saikia (third) and Rupa Rani Tirkey (skip) defeated South Africa 17-10 to clinch the yellow medal. This is the first time in the history of the Games that India has won a medal in this category. Meanwhile, New Zealand won bronze by beating Fiji 17-10. In the fierce 15 round battle, India was in a better position with 8-2 at one stage. But, South Africa, who recovered exceptionally, won three rounds in a row and leveled the score at 8-8.
South Africa scored two more points in the 11th round to lead 10-8. But, the Indian women won the next round and evened the score once again. And in the last three rounds, they won with a wonderful performance. India beat New Zealand 15-11 in Women’s Triple Sectional-Section-C. India lost to New Zealand 9-18 in Pairs Section-B.
Poonam failed..: In the women’s 76 kg category, Poonam Yadav finished at the bottom with a poor performance. Although standing in the medal race in the snatch, she failed in all three attempts in the clean and jerk. Poonam lifted 95 kg in the second attempt and 98 kg in the third attempt in the snatch and stood second. However, despite trying three times in the clean and jerk, she could not lift 116 kg. After the last attempt, she challenged the decision of the judges and was disqualified from the competition.

Again the title is ours
The Indian men’s TT team won its third gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. 2018 Gold Coast Champion Indian Men’s TT Team scored a stunning win over Singapore. In the first doubles, Harmeet Desai-Sathian gave a good start by winning 13-11, 11-7, 11-5 against Young Lajak Quek-Yu N Koeng Pang. But, in the singles, Sarath Kamal lost to Ji U Clarence Chew 7-11, 14-12, 3-11, 9-11 to level the score at 1-1. In the third match, Sathian won against U N Koeng Pang 12-10, 7-11, 11-7, 11-4 and took the lead again for Team India. In the other singles, Harmeet Desai won 11-8, 11-5, 11-6 against G U Clarence Chew to seal India’s victory. Meanwhile, Sarath Kamal, who won the 10th medal in the Commonwealth with this victory, stood opposite Gagan Narang, the shooter who won the most medals in these games.

Silver ‘Development’
In men’s 96 kg category, Vikas Thakur lifted 346 (155+191) kg and won the silver medal. Vikas, who lifted 149, 153 and 155 kg in three attempts in the snatch.. Although he lifted 187 and 191 kg in the first two attempts in the clean and jerk, he failed to lift 198 kg in the last attempt. Dan Opelogue from Samoa won the gold with a record of 381 (171+210) kg. Fiji’s Taniela won bronze by lifting 343 (155+188) kg. Vikas, who won silver in 2014, won bronze in 2018.
