CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati has acquired central defender Matt Miazga from Chelsea in the English Premier League.
Miazga, who has also played for the US national team, signed a contract that will keep him in Cincinnati through 2025 with an option for 2026.
The defender has been with Chelsea since 2016, but appeared only twice for the team. He spent much of his time as a Blues player on loan to other clubs.
In his most recent venture, he made 11 appearances, on loan to Spain’s Alavés, in the previous season.
Miazga, 27, previously played in MLS with the New York Red Bulls from 2013-15.
Originally from New Jersey, Miazga has made 22 appearances for the US national team. Last year, he played just two duels with the national team.
He scored a goal against Nicaragua in the 2017 Gold Cup.
“He’s had some very unique and clear experiences in Europe, in top leagues, and he’s had wins there,” Cincinnati general manager Chris Albright said during a news conference on Friday. “But the factor that sets him apart is his knowledge of MLS and having won something here. And I think the further we go in the process, the more we’ll learn about Matt, the kind of person and kind of competitor that he is. That is why we are even more motivated to have achieved this agreement”.
Cincinnati is ninth in the Eastern Conference and looking to advance to the playoffs for the first time. He joined MLS in 2019.
