The continuous power outages have tripled in the Táchira state, mainly affecting the northern zone, where the owners of chicken farms turn on the alerts after the great losses that have been registered in recent weeks.

Daniela Gonzalez

Ramón Molina, supervisor of 48 farms in the northern area of Táchira and who provides services to producers in different municipalities, mainly farms located between Caliches, Santa Rosa and La Fría, assures that the mortality rate due to failures has increased. electricity, where they are also affected by the arrival of Colombian chickens on the market.

“We have a weekly rotation of one hundred thousand chicks, and in the last three weeks we have had to lower it due to the entry of slaughtered chicken brought from Colombia, and electricity rationing increased mortality, complicating the situation,” he explained.

Although the producers have equipped themselves with electricity generators, this is not enough to turn on all the equipment and make it work properly. In turn, he lamented that the mortality rate had increased radically.

“Farms that had a mortality of 10 to 20 chickens, now present a mortality of up to 300 chickens in a single day, mainly due to power cuts during daylight hours, where the temperature and humidity have affected the chickens (…) In the producers have had losses in the last 10 days; despite the fact that they have plants, the long hours of electrical failures do not allow the fans and equipment to work properly.”

Humidity and ammonia must be regulated by fans; however, as they do not have electricity, they do not work, causing the death of the birds, explains the producer.

«There are farms that have lost up to a thousand kilos of chicken in a single day; the farms in the Caliches, Santa Rosa and La Fría areas have been very affected, although the days have been cool in the north, there are factors such as humidity and ammonia, which must be controlled with ventilation and fans they work with electricity, so, when the electricity fails, they turn on the generators, but the operation is not 100% ».

Colombian chickens lay in check to tachirenses producers

Molina reported that in the last two weeks Colombian chickens have been allowed to enter the market and that lowers the sales of producers from Tachira.

“Production had been increasing, in less than a year, by 150%, more than 150,000 weekly chickens were being raised in the last month, this dropped to 90,000 and if the electrical failures continue and the entry of benefited chickens from Colombia, surely not production will be able to increase, and it could continue to drop”, lamented the man.

DATA
