On November 23 of this year, the republican scientific conference “Charents and his era” dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the poet Yeghishe Charents’s birth started at the RA National Academy of Sciences.
Academician-secretary of the Department of Armenian Studies and Social Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia Yuri Suvaryan welcomed the participants of the conference. “The Armenian poetic world created talents, but they were always guided by geniuses. Yeghishe Charents is one of those geniuses. Today we are in the poetic world of Charents and we feel how deep his thinking is, how influential and valid are the ideas he expressed in his works. Charents is an innovator both in terms of the content of the poem, as well as in terms of style and the purposefulness of the choice of words,” Yuri Suvaryan said in his speech. He mentioned that the works of Charents are being prepared for academic publication at the initiative of the Institute of Literature named after Manuk Abeghyan of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia. The first volume will be published soon.
On behalf of RA Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Vahram Dumanyan, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Arayik Khzmalyan welcomed the conference participants. In his speech, he said, in particular: “Charents is an ontological guide for us, an ontological concept and in that sense one of the most relevant figures in general. I can hardly imagine a more appropriate and more appropriate time to read and re-read Charents than ours, because in Charents’ heritage are condensed our eternal reflections, national concerns, historical challenges, moral and psychological impasses and patriotic ups and downs. I really hope that the conference will become an opportunity to say a new word about the inexhaustible greatness whose name is Yeghishe Charents.”
“Yeghishe Charents created during the difficult times divided into several historical sub-periods and during successive literary trends and worldview scandals. Charents’ work became the condensed poetic expression of the period. He is surely a symbol of tradition and innovation, harmonious development,” said Vardan Devrikyan, director of the Institute of Literature named after Manuk Abeghyan of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, Doctor of Philology, Vardan Devrikyan in his speech.
Zhanna Manukyan, director of Yeghishe Charents House-Museum, noted that within the framework of the anniversary year dedicated to Yeghishe Charents, various programs and events for different target audiences were implemented and are still being implemented. “The “Charents and its period” republican conference is one of the most important initiatives of the year, in which 40 specialists from different regions of Armenia participate. The number of participants seems to be symbolic in the context of this important event of revaluation, discovery, publicization of the rich literary heritage of a genius who lived only 40 years of life. Along with the 125th anniversary of his birth, this year, November 27, also marks the 85th anniversary of the poet’s death. In this regard, the house-museum declared November as a month of remembrance. The month will be concluded with the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the poet, which is planned to be placed on the front wall of Yeghishe Charents House-Museum, where the poet lived in the last two years of his life, 1935-1937, at 17 Mashtots St., Yerevan, said the director of Yeghishe Charents House-Museum. : He mentioned that it is also planned to sign a museum-publishing-institute cooperation memorandum, the goal of which is to have the complete edition of Yeghishe Charents’ works, a collection of 13 volumes, on the table of the scientific community every year from next year.

They also presented plans to work with our writers in the future, to present different translations in their countries. A meeting was also organized at Tsaghkadzor Writers’ House, and writers and literary experts presented their ideas and materials about Charents,” said Edward Militonyan. He mentioned that the Union of Writers of Armenia has published a book titled “I Am Now”, which presents the works of writers dedicated to Charents, the works of literary critics, and essays.
The event was marked by Ruben Harutyunyan, Academician-Secretary of the Natural Sciences Department of the NAS of RA, Corresponding Member of the NAS of RA, by donating Charents’ handwritten autograph and other documentary materials kept in his family archive to Yeghishe Charents House-Museum. “Charents is sacred for all of us, for our family, especially because over the years our family was very close to Charents. His unique works include the memories of my grandmother, Professor Ashkhen Harutyunyan, and two poems that Charents dedicated to my mother, Margarit Harutyunyan. In the 50s, the photos of his collections were from our house. We once donated a large package to the museum.
