Benzema the hero of Madrid
It says: Only Vidovich
Just like on Tuesday, two return matches of the eighth finals of the Champions League were on the agenda last night. Real and Paris SG competed in Madrid, while home City hosted Lisbon Sporting in Manchester.
We followed the match in Madrid, as the match in Manchester was just a formality. Namely, City won the first match with 5: 0.
Real chased the goal behind from Paris.
The home team immediately started putting pressure. Vinicius Jr broke through the left flank a few times, but there was no real conclusion. The Parisians focused on defending their goal and counterattacks via the fast Mbappe. The latter had his first good chance of the match. He shot strongly from the left from about ten meters, but exactly into the well-placed goalkeeper Curtois.
Paris regained their balance, shooting Neymar in the 23rd minute, but too light for Curtois.
In the 25th minute, a little noticeable Benzema shot well from about twenty meters, the goalkeeper of the guests Donnarumma with a beautiful parade bounced the ball into the corner.
In the 31st minute, Messi and Neymar played a nice combination, which Messi failed to finish with a goal.
Five minutes later, he tried to hit Benzema with his head, but he shot too much in the middle of the goal. Donnarumma could have a job.
In the 37th minute, a similar attempt by Benzema, this time he shot past the left goalpost.
Two minutes later, however, the guests got what they wanted. After Neymar’s deep ball, Mbappe ran towards Curtois from the middle and beat him with a powerful shot into his corner.
By the end of the half, the Parisians could have increased their advantage, but they were too complicated in the end of the action.
Until the 60th minute, the guests controlled the course of the match. At that time, the goalkeeper of Donnarumma was playing in front of his own goal, and his mistake was punished by Benzema, who equalized the result.
Three minutes later, the same player could have taken the lead in the lead, with his head missing a long corner of Donnarumma’s neck.
Vinicius Jr had a good try after 73 minutes, coming in on a fine move from the left, but the ball went wide. He was alone in front of Donnarumma, but shot over the goal.
In the 76th minute, the equalizer. Modrić passed to Benzema, who, with the help of Marquinhos, who was hit by the ball on the way to the goal, put his team in the lead.
The very next minute, Benzema scored for the third time in the match. This time the mistake was made by Marquinhos, who inadvertently passed the ball to him. The Frenchman, however, once again showed his realization skills.
After this goal, Real had the initiative until the end of the match, the guests were no longer dangerous. It remained at 3: 1 for Real, and in the total of both matches 3: 2 for the Spanish team.
By the 60th minute of the match, the Parisians, with the exception of the first ten minutes, were a better opponent. Especially in the first half, when they literally ‘hid’ the ball from the home team a few times. The second goal hung in the air, it seemed that they would easily defend the advantage from Paris. There was no sign of a reversal.
Then came Donnarumma’s initial mistake, which must not happen even at the lowest level of the competition. This was followed by bad luck with the second goal and again a big individual mistake with the third. It is incomprehensible why their game fell apart after Benzema’s first goal. Namely, they are top players, but they have literally ‘failed’ in the last half hour of the game. As if they were scared after the first goal of the home team, they played practically nothing until the end of the match.
The big debtor of both matches is not so long ago the best player in the world Messi, who showed absolutely too little. More was expected of Neymar as well. Mbappe was brilliant, he showed all his talent, but it wasn’t enough.
Real achieved a big win, although they were in a subordinate position most of the time in both games. It was decided by the last half hour of the second match. The absolute hero of the match is Benzema, who is most deserving of Real’s celebration. Immediately behind him is Curtois, who has defended many of PSG’s chances in these two games.
In last night’s match, Manchester City and Sporting split with 0: 0, the total result was 5: 0 for City. The ‘Citizens’ easily qualified for the quarter-finals.
The other four return matches of the round of 16 will be played next Tuesday and Wednesday.
