The joint study of the Institute of Molecular Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry Clin “ClinSoft” organization revealed the immunogenetic version HLA-C * 04: 01, which predisposes the severe course of the coronavirus.
Reaffirming the importance of other factors in the course of the disease, such as male և age, it was found that the presence of a significant HLA-C * 04: 01 variant հյուս in the human genome contributes to the severe course of the infection in the Armenian population.
“The absence of the HLA-C * 04: 01 version causes the asymptomatic course of the disease for the majority of the population. “It has been found that dual wearing of this variant impairs the recognition of coronavirus by immune cells, slows the formation of the proper immune response, contributing to the severe course of the disease,” said senior researcher at the Laboratory of Human Genomics, Institute of Molecular Biology, NAS RA. He noted that the study included sequenced DNA samples isolated from the mouthwash or blood of more than 3,000 Armenians. Based on sequencing clinical data, an algorithm for assessing the risk of severe disease was developed.
“From the point of view of public health, this important result justifies the need for primary vaccination of the target group against COVID-19, which will prevent the severe course of the disease,” said the director of the institute Arsen Arakelyan.
